The Volcanic Eifel, Vulkaneifel in German, is a captivating region nestled within the Eifel Mountains in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Its distinctive features originate from its volcanic geological past. The hallmark of this volcanic expanse is the presence of explosion crater lakes, known as maars, along with other telltale signs of ancient volcanic activity. This predominantly rural landscape is characterised by hills with lush grasslands, expansive woodlands, productive agricultural areas, and scattered urban structures.

Challenges facing the region.

The Vulkaneifel region is struggling with the tangible impacts of climate change, albeit in subtle ways. The area has witnessed a surge in extreme weather events, including storms, droughts, and intense rainfall leading to floods. These observable changes pose significant challenges for the region, demanding attention, and adaptive measures to mitigate the potential consequences on its environment and communities.
