Visit to the Italian Nature-Based Solution Implementation Site
Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are adaptation measures to reduce the frequency and magnitude of hydro-meteorological hazards. However, NBS consist of natural elements that are also exposed to these hazards. Therefore, the design phase is crucial to maximize the outcomes of the NbS implementation.
The partners of the University of Bologna and the Delta-Po Regional Park visited the private land suited for the NBS implementation in the Italian Frontrunning Region on the 21st of October 2024. The survey aimed to meet local stakeholders and identify the precise location for the two NBS implementations.
These NBS include the plantation of salicornia for the reduction of salt-water intrusion and the construction of a sand dune for the mitigation of storm surges and coastal erosion. Visiting the NBS site is a fundamental step for sharing knowledge between local experts and stakeholders. Additionally, this step helps to collect information essential for the development of a good modeling strategy for that specific site. The modeling analysis requires the selection of indicators suitable for depicting the ecosystemic and socio-economic characteristics of the site. The effectiveness and efficiency of an NBS measure rely on the adopted methodology in LAND4CLIMATE that will consider risk reduction, provision of co-benefits, and public acceptance.
Stay tuned on the LAND4CLIMATE website to find out the next steps on the NBS implementation and assessment!
