From Timiș to Shanghai: Romania’s Green Solutions on Private Land
Between October 20 and 23, the international conference “2025 Asia–Europe Large River Regional Dialogue” took place in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, bringing together representatives from 14 countries to discuss the sustainable management of water resources and the protection of aquatic ecosystems. Romania was represented by Cătălin Aldescu, member of the research and implementation team of LAND4CLIMATE.
The conference focused on three main areas: global cooperation for the sustainable development of river basins, the promotion of strategies that enhance hydrological efficiency through Nature-based Solutions (NBS), and the identification of new opportunities for collaboration among participating countries. During the working sessions, Cătălin Aldescu presented not only the organization of Romania’s water management system, but also how Romania, through the Banat Water Basin Administration (BWBA), integrates these innovative solutions into national water management, highlighting the objectives of LAND4CLIMATE.
Implemented along the middle section of the Timiș River, LAND4CLIMATE proposes a model for managing private land that combines science, conservation, and community engagement to reduce flood risks and strengthen ecosystem resilience. The pilot model developed by BWBA, as a project partner, provides a concrete example of how Nature-based Solutions on private land can become a profitable investment with long-term economic and ecological benefits. By participating in this international conference, Romania, through BWBA, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting water resources and adapting to climate change, demonstrating that innovation, research, and international collaboration can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for a sustainable future.
