Petrovice - Landscape Water
A month ago, UJEP and NPCS teams visited the terrain to explore suitable sites for NBS implementation. They visited the village of Petrovice (CZ) on the Czech-German border, at the foothill of the Ore Mountains. The selected site is surrounded by sloping agricultural land and shaded by the rain shadow of the Ore Mountains. It is therefore very important to focus on water resources and water in the landscape in general.
The site of interest offers an unmaintained water source that is hidden in the forest on its edge. The surrounding land has served many purposes in the past, as pasture, but e.g. it has also been used by the military at one point. Some of these land-use purposes did not take into account the needs of the landscape and therefore the natural flow has been interrupted, the partial drainage and the relief has been changed.
This particular location could be one of the key sites for the implementation of NBS, which would return water to the landscape and thus help the whole area. The selected stream could in the future provide water in the landscape upstream and feed the Elbe River further downstream. Judge for yourself if this makes sense.
