Naturethon Initiative: Empowering Communities to Navigate Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience
A new grassroots initiative, Naturethon, invites citizens to explore and implement Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to combat climate change and reduce disaster risks. Running from May to October 2024, this initiative will engage communities across Europe and beyond in finding innovative solutions to climate challenges through NBS. Citizen groups are encouraged to discuss and develop ideas that address local disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation needs.
Presented by the NATURANCE project, Naturethon seeks to transform communities into hubs of sustainability and resilience by fostering dialogue and action at the grassroots level. Participants, known as "NBS champions", are encouraged to form local groups, acquire essential knowledge, and engage in meaningful conversations about how natural ecosystems can mitigate risks like flooding, heatwaves, and other climate-related threats.
Naturethon empowers local communities to take an active role in addressing climate change and disaster risks through NBS. By involving citizens directly, the initiative fosters grassroots engagement, enabling localized and sustainable solutions to global environmental challenges. Naturethon promotes the use of natural processes—such as reforestation and green infrastructure—to build climate resilience, reduce the impact of extreme weather events, and enhance biodiversity.
In addition to empowering communities, Naturethon serves as a platform for education and collaboration, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools needed to implement NBS in their local areas. It bridges the gap between high-level policy discussions and real-world action, ensuring that NBS become practical, community-driven solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
LAND4CLIMATE endorses Naturethon's objectives, highlighting the campaign’s goal of engaging citizens to tackle climate-related issues at the local level. We emphasise the importance of collective action and citizen participation in the fight against climate change, encouraging everyone to join the campaign in a united effort for a greener future.
