The Basics of Nature-based Solutions (NbS): LAND4CLIMATE strategies for effective multi-actor collaboration, co-production of knowledge, and overcoming language barriers
LAND4CLIMATE has been invited to contribute to the ALBATROSS project’s Training of Trainers initiative, a programme supporting vulnerable communities across five African countries in strengthening their resilience to escalating climate shocks. The initiative aims to move beyond traditional coping mechanisms that are no longer sufficient in the face of climate change. By integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) with data-driven Climate Services (CS), the programme empowers local leaders to develop long-term strategies for safeguarding food, water, and economic security. Prof. Stefan Greiving from TU Dortmund University has already participated in the first training session, presenting approaches for mainstreaming Nature-based Solutions into spatial planning, with a particular focus on the use of private land. Drawing on the LAND4CLIMATE framework, the contribution demonstrated how climate risk assessments and impact chains could support the identification of effective “no-regret” adaptation measures. The second session, scheduled for 2 June, will further showcase the LAND4CLIMATE experience by exploring strategies for effective multi-actor collaboration, co-production of knowledge, and overcoming language barriers in climate adaptation processes. The session will also present a practical example of NbS implementation on private rural land in the flood- and drought-prone Euskirchen district in Germany. The case study highlights three adaptation measures - Miscanthus buffer strips, Tiny Forests, and depaving interventions - while emphasizing the importance of engaging private landowners as active stewards of climate adaptation and biodiversity protection.
